Redstone is one of the Marvels of the Colorado High Country. There are many sights, tastes, and sounds to experience here. This cache is placed in honor of a truely great place to visit.
We travel through Redstone several times a year while on our way to our "Ft. Sam" over near the Grand Mesa. This wonderful area has always brought us joy. The history here is more rich than the wealth that mines produced. The wildlife here is almost always visable, especially if it is "that time of day". If you are able to spend some time tour the town and check out the many wonderful places to eat.
On your way back down to Glenwood Springs watch the river banks. On the other side of the river there is an old narrow gauge railroad bed. That is how they brought the beautiful white marble down from the quarry up in Marble Colorado. It must have been a nightmare trying to keep the load secure as they came steaming down that slope and around those curves. If you look closely you can see the large chunks of marble that broke their bonds and ended up on the river bank. That marble was headed to Washington DC and was to be used to build the Lincoln Memorial!
