Geocache Description:

The 59th cache by caughtatwork is a short walk from Flinders Street station or a leisurely stroll along Southbank.

The Sandridge Bridge at 178.4m long is a historic former railway bridge over the Yarra River only a short walk from Flinders Street Station.

In 2006 it was redeveloped as a new pedestrian and cycle path and public space connecting Queensbridge Square on the south bank of the Yarra to Flinders Walk on the north bank. A series of metal statue-like structures called "The Travellers" have been erected along the bridge.

Telling the tale of migration to Victoria ,"The Travellers" slide quietly across the bridge 3 times a day.

Unveiled just three days from the start of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, the 10 sculptures are a tribute to multiculturalism.

The bridge originally provided a direct route from Flinders Street Station to Port Melbourne carrying the Port Melbourne and St Kilda railway lines. It was last used for freight in the 1950s, and passenger services closed in 1987, with the replacement by light rail lines of Melbourne tram route 96 to St Kilda, and Melbourne tram route 109 to Port Melbourne.

The Sandridge Bridge, registered as a Melbourne heritage site was built by David Munro in 1888, one of the first railway structures in Melbourne to use steel girders rather than iron and still stands today, almost a good as they day it was first erected.

The cache is hidden in such a manner that it is only visible from one direction and you will need to be within about 1m of it before you can spot it. It is a camouflaged 1 liter biokips (lock-n-lock style) container that matches the surrounding structure.

You will need to be both circumspect and brave to retrieve the cache as you will be visible to potentially thousands of people.

One method of gaining access is easier than another, so your choice is steel or stone to get to the hiding place.

I hope you enjoy "The Travellers" (both cache and sculptures).
