Geocache Description:

Akaka Falls State Park actually features two lovely falls. This cache is not placed along the park pathway. Instead, start your search at a discrete little path into the woods which you will find to the left of the main park entrance. (Path starts at N 19*51.221; W 155*09.138.) It isn't far, but it is buggy and maybe wet. Your GPS unit will probably have trouble under all the foliage, so use your "cache sense" to guess where along the path it will be.

To get to the park, take Highway 19 and follow the signs for the turn-off to Akaka Falls about 12 miles north of Hilo. The park is about 3 miles from the turn-off; just follow the signs.

When I decided to place a cache here, my hope was to put it at the top of Akaka Falls. I have seen hikers there (though not for a couple of years), and my neighbors gave me instructions on how to get there. They say it is quite pleasant, not too onerous a path, and you can swim in the pools up there. However, despite their instructions (which are passed on in the next paragraph), I was not able to locate the path to the top of the falls. I encourage cachers to try; if you make it there, please tell me when you log your find on line how you did it!

TO GET TO THE TOP OF THE FALLS (according to my neighbor and not confirmed by me): there is a dirt road on the left just before the park. Park your car and walk along it. (I can vouch for this part; in fact, if you just walk for a mile or so along this road, you will have a wonderful walk through trees and pasture; you just won’t get to the top of Akaka Falls.) There is a fence to your right (true, but it is quite difficult to see). At the end of this fence, turn into the woods to your right and this will be the trailhead for the hike to the top of the falls. (We never found this trailhead; it may be rather overgrown.) You will need to go down a metal ladder, and you’ll see county pipes that carry Honomu’s water. Use care as the path, while not really treacherous, does go close by a big drop-off that could be hazardous in slippery conditions.
