Geocache Description:

Coastal walk with beach, marine trail and rock walking sections. Not suitable for short legs.

This cache includes terrain that is not suitable for small children or pets. If you bring a small person there are spots where you will need to have them in your direct control to prevent a possible mishap and others where you will need to lift or carry them over difficult spots.

Locations of stages were averaged with readings taken on several days. The averages from the two days were again averaged. I had good reception at all stages. Reception between stages may be spotty.

Co-ordinates given are for stage one of a multi-stage cache. No driving required beyond the parking area. Allow 1.5 - 2 hrs walking each way plus search time. There used to be a parking ticket machine at the parking lot but it was removed. Costs of repairs far exceeded revenue. There is an envelope pay system now for parking. Strangely enough the supply of envelopes doesn’t seem to decrease.

From the co-ordinates given it should be no great trick for locals to decipher the anagramatic title.

To get to the Stage one clue use the well-maintained trail to the beach from the parking lot. Enjoy the walk to the south-east end of the beach. You will see a variety of beach make-ups. Down-shore wave action sorts material along the length of the beach with the coarsest material at the north-west end progressively grading to sand at the south-eastern end. There is one point at mid beach that might be difficult at a very high tide or in violent surf conditions.

At the sout-east end of the beach make your way around the point on the rocks. This will save about 15 minutes on the trail. Again, at a very high tide or in heavy surf conditions this route could be difficult. Before venturing around the point, take the time to check wave patterns. Not all waves are the same size. If you have any doubts whatsoever use the inland trail, marked with a buoy.

Stage one clues are near the lookout. Because this stage has a habit of disappearing, six copies of the info for stage 2 were placed here on Aug 5/2014 in various locations. When standing on the high point with your back to the water, there is a large tree (approx NW) in front of you. It is beside the path to stage 2. Four of the copies are hidden at various locations near the base of the tree and two copies in the rock between the lookout and the tree.

From stage one follow the Juan De Fuca Trail to Sombrio Point. This is an interesting trail with a few spots that call for care. Hikers travel this trail with heavy packs so it is not that difficult, just be careful. Co-ordinates place you north of the centre of a natural bridge. Nearby rock looks like concrete but is actually the result of a lava flow onto an ancient beach. Take some time to check out the varieties of past types of magmatic flow. If that’s too boring, check out the wave action through the surge channel and under the natural bridge. It can be interesting in high surf conditions.

Two copies of the clue to stage 3 have been placed under the edge of the top layer of magmatic flow. Best seen if standing on the lower rock formation.

From Stage two the best way is to scramble over the rocks. Before picking your path check out the rocks. If they’re wet they’re probably slippery. They could be wet because it’s raining (that would be obvious) or because of wave action. Take some time to check out the wave action to be sure your path is above their reach. The slope of the coast makes it possible to select a path well above the wave action unless you happen to be there during a 100 year storm. At the Stage 3 co-ordinates you will cross a small creek. This should not present a problem even after a heavy rainfall. Just be careful of slippery rocks. Look for a piece of wood jammed into some black rock. It’s all black rock, but not all of it has wood jammed into it.

From Stage 3 to stage 4 continue along the rocks. A little beyond half way there is surge channel where you have the option of going down and across or up and around. Before venturing down remember: wave action and slippery rocks. There is a very good path around the surge channel but it is difficult to see from the rocks. Keep looking if you choose that route. Once you are on the path it is very obvious. Stage 4 clues, 2 copies, are on the rocks just above the line of grass and well above the maw (ref definition 3 below).

Stage 4 to Stage 5 is a very short hop. Stage 5 is visible from Stage 4. Scramble down the rocks towards the south or follow the path. The suggested approach to Stage 5 is from the southeast. The Stage 5 clue is in a safe location about 3 M east of the maw. Do not go across the maw without checking wave action. In heavy surf conditions blasts of salt water can jet out onto the rock face directly opposite. The rocks in front of the maw are almost always wet: ie slippery. Use your head.

Stage 5 to the final cache location is again a very short distance. Go back east a short distance then south then follow the arrow.

Medium size container.
Miscellaneous junk of no particular value.
