Geocache Description:

Christmas Valley Area, S. Upper Truckee Rd.

This is a relocation of the original "Riders" cache. You're looking for an ammo box. The area is active bear territory, so caching here during the day would be best. Mosquitos are hungry around here as well.
Cache contents are: log book, trinkets from our travels, and the usual "stuff" found in most caches.
This cache commemorates the Pony Express, which operated between St. Louis Missouri and San Francisco California. The idea was conceived in January, 1860 as a means to move the mail faster than on a stagecoach. After buying 600 horses and employing 80 riders (at $100/ month), the first rider left St. Louis April 3 1860. The Pony Express operated until 1862, when the telegraph lines were completed. The mail pouch was called the mochila, a new rider took over every 75-100 miles, the horses were changed every 10-15 miles, and the average re-mount took less than 2minutes. There were 165 stations on the route, and in the 2 years the Pony Express operated, 1 rider was killed and 1 mail pouch (mochila) was lost.
It was a 21 month journey. Check out the other stations that are in the area - Yanks in Meyers, Friday's station at Stateline, Woodfords, Ca, and along highways 50 and 88.
