This cache has been archived.

Nomex: Hi esquimaux
As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm temporarily archiving this to keep it from continually showing up in search lists. Just contact us when you have the cache repaired, [RED]and assuming it still meets the guidelines[/RED], we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Don't hesitate to email me via the link on my Profile if you have any questions. [red]Please be sure to include the cache name and GCxxxx number, or better yet, the URL of the cache page.[/red]

Thanks for your cooperation!

Geocache Description:

The unique features along this trail were created by lava flows, mud flows containing ash, cinders and water, and thick ash deposits from volcanic eruptions. The significant elevation difference between this trail and the valley floor below was caused by seismic forces and glacial movements.

This trail is 1 1/2 miles from end to end, and has been designed as an interpretive experience, with a trail guide explaining points of interest located along the trail. On the south rim, the points are numbered 1-9, though I've only seen markers for 7 and 8. But reading through them as you walk the trail you can make out where many of them are. I will try to attach copies of the 4-page trail guide, or you can get your own at the Summit Ranger Station.

The cache is a black ammo can, hidden in The Maze. The search itself involves only a mild hike (about .4 mile from parking), and a small bit of rock scrambling - nothing crazy. But the cache is only about 10 feet from a shear cliff. I have attached a photo showing the general area of the cache. Be sure to listen to the hollow sounds of your footsteps as you walk through the maze, it's a bit eerie.

Because the trail frequently leads along the edge of a significant drop, I wouldn't recommend small children here.

Be sure to bring your camera, because the views here are amazing. But take it in while you're here, because pictures just don't do it justice.
