Geocache Description:

A two-stage multi-cache, approximately 5 mile hike round trip mostly on an old railbed and gravel road. Some areas near the cache have restricted access January 2 and June 30 of each year due to proximity to Bald Eagle nesting areas. But as of 2014, i think you can reach the cache year-round without crossing restricted areas.

You've all heard of Grandaddy before, at least if you've read the story about the Highwayman. This story is about Grandaddy and i'll try to keep it short. Like i said in the Highwayman's story, Grandaddy's family didn't have much money. They did take advantage of public education, though, and made sure Grandaddy went all the way through grade 12. It was on this committment that Grandaddy's fortune turned, although not quite in the way you might expect. His last year in school he won the spelling bee and received as his prize a brand new Webster's dictionary.

Grandaddy liked the dictionary pretty well, but he was itching to leave town and it wasn't the kind of thing he wanted weighing him down. A few days later he found someone who wanted that dictionary more than they wanted a broken pocket watch. He fixed the watch and sold it for enough money to get a train ticket to Norfolk. There he found work and saved up enough to send for Grams, who snuck out the window of her parent's house one night and came to join him.

But this is a geocache, not a letterbox, so i'll cut to the chase. Maybe it had to do with the dictionary or maybe it was the other way around, but all his life Grandaddy was on the lookout for a good swap. As well as he did for himself, you'd think he always got the better end of the deal. But the way Grandaddy saw it, it wasn't a good trade unless BOTH people got the best end of the deal.

When i was in 2nd grade he and Grams moved back here from out west, after trading a small ranch and BLM grazing rights for the house and land where i spent my subsequent dreamy summers in search of the Highwayman's treasure.... but that's a different cache.

The first stage of this multi starts about .3 miles from the Highwayman cache. Of course you'll probably prefer to take the long way, a little over 3 miles by car plus from the Highwayman parking, plus about .8 miles on foot. The 2nd stage will then be a short hike of less than 2.5 miles along the rail line (which can have weeds up to waist high, so dress appropriately). You can take the dirt road back to the car, which will be about 2.2 miles or so from the final stage.

This cache is on "serious" Gamelands. Not the kind out behind your subdivision, where nobody ever hunts, but the kind where in deer season you can see deer parts beside where you park your car. I strongly recommend only seeking this cache on Sundays during deer season.

After finding the cache, walk a little further down the railbed for a nice view where it ends in the lake... or you can take a short ~.1 mile bushwhack to the "Round Back" cache, after noting its corrected coordinates from this logbook.

update 2014/10/25
Both stages have been replaced. The final is now an ammo box, so hopefully that will last longer than the previous plastic container. If you like something in the cache, take it. No need to swap unless you want to. Let me know if it gets empty.
