Geocache Description:

Castle of the Ravens. A nice easy cache this one, with an excellent walk passing cup marked rocks and carved stones. It has truly amazing views and the chance to visit a low level trig point.

This Cache is not available during the Lambing season.

The 'Castle of the Ravens' is located on the Lunga Estate, which forms the main part of the Craignish Peninsula.

Its best to park in Ardfern for this one, and then walk approximately 1 km to the south of the village, turning off to the right @ heron cottage and up past the Goose farm..!!! Follow th track over towards Barrackan. If you wish, a short climb up to the top of Barr Mhor will provide amazing views and a trig point. Before that though its worth stopping to examine the cup marked rocks (see waypoint and picture).

Please remember when passing Barrachan House, that this is a private house and garden. The owners don't mind as long as you are on good behaviour and respect their property.

Once your past Barrachan and into the bottom park follow the track round to the small river, just befor it you'll find the 'Flat stone of the just man' otherwise known as 'Leac an Duine Choir' (see picture and waypoint)

***I recommend paying a visit to the local shop in Ardfern and purchacing a copy of the Craignish Peninsula Guide book, which will tell you the story behind the stone 'Leac an Duine Choir'.***

So, onward to the 'Castle of the Ravens' head for the gate at the bottom of the park and up onto the hill, follow the GPSr.

The 'Castle of the Ravens' is a bronze age fort which was rebuilt during the 13/14th C, when the 'Lords of the Isles' were at their strongest. At one point there was a chain from Craignish point to Jura, placed by the Lord to prevent ships entering their private water. The castle would have no doubt formed part of the network of forts/duns from which the area was watched and guarded.

The Castle is formed on a volcanic dyke and plint which on its own is incredible. The wildlife is also great and its worthwhile spending some time here, take your lunch and do some relaxing. Just beware of the cliffs. Watch for the Ravens too.. after which the castle is named and Craignish is famed for. The Raven is also a symbol of the MacDougall's who were 'Lords of the Isles'. The Lunga Estate still remains in MacDougall hands, currently owned by Colin Lindsay-MacDougall.

So, there you go.. I hope you enjoy this cache and the other caches i've placed on the Lunga Estate. (www.lunga.com)

Once again, many thanks to the current Laird who has allowed me to place caches on the estate.
