Geocache Description:

The Wreck of 'The Pandora'

The ship was originally built in Middlesbrough and launched as the SETI in July 1902 for the James Moss Company of Liverpool for their company's Egyptian trade. In November 1914, she was purchased by the Admiralty and renamed H.M.S. PANDORA, then between 1920 and 1921 she was converted at H.M. Dockyard at Devonport to a Submarine depot repair/supply ship and renamed again as H.M.S. DOLPHIN in October 1924. Early in the Second World War she was picked out to be a blockship in the Clyde, where she was being towed to on the 23rd November 1939. However she foundered and was lost one and a half miles south-southeast of Blyth, after detonating a German laid mine.

The wreck at the above co-ordinates, in 24 metres of water, is known as 'The Pandora' and is one of my favourite dives in the North East. The majority of the wreck is well broken except the boilers and the bow section that stands 7 metres above the seabed. A short video of a dive on the wreck can be seen at www.divepics.co.uk/latest.

The Cache Location

You don't need to go diving to find this cache. There is plenty of free parking within 70 metres of the cache; but to publish the parking co-ordinates may give you too much information. Stealth may be required on the summer weekends as the general area is quite popular. The final cache location has been given in the following series of numbers. To find the cache and solve the 'additional help clue' you will need one piece of equipment that you may well carry with you when you go caching, and possibly you may have one in the house too. Pay special attention to the words that you will get from the following code.
