This traditional geocache is located in the community of Glen Bard, Antigonish County.
There are not any road signs to lead you to this area where some of the original, protestant Scottish settlers arrived in the early 1800's. However, the name is erected at the entrance of the Glen Bard Cemetery, the final resting place of many of these pioneers.
The cairn that stands at the roadside, at N 45' 34.430 W 62' 09.187, honors an immigrant who was recognized for his literary prowess on both sides of the Atlantic. I am writing about Iain Mac Gille - Eathain known as the Bard MacLean, his Gaelic name translates to John MacLean. He is renowned for his compositions including A' Choille Ghruamaich (The Gloomy Forest) which describes the hardships of body and soul faced by the Scottish immigrants.
A translation of the Gaelic inscription on his marble grave marker, near the front of the cemetery, says:
"Whoever goes about this cemetery, stop and listen to a voice from the grave. Keep up the Gaelic as long as you live, its poetry and its high position. Pay heed to everything that is good and live to God everyday."
A stroll through the stones reveals much of the culture and beliefs of the early residents.
The cache is located within the gloomy forest at N 45' 34.462 W 62' 09.119.
The cache originally contained an ice / hot pak, a cable splitter, Armor all wipes, 3-pak of inflating needles, magnetic pick-up tool, a bag of number beads, a marine safety whistle, a carabiner, an LCD tool kit, thunderstix, and a ping pong ball.
You can see the foundation of the Glen Bard United Church that is evident on the north edge of the cemetery.
