Geocache Description:

The cache is situated adjacent to a late medieval dovecote on the charmingly named Lusty Hill overlooking the small rural town of Bruton. It is a small cache positioned close to the parking and should take no more than 20 minutes to complete.

Although some distance from the estate, the Dovecote at Bruton is managed by the National Trust through the Stourhead estate wardens. The dovecote is Grade II* listed and is a Scheduled Monument, forming part of a wider Augustinian Priory dating to the late fifteenth century. The dovecote along with the nearby pillow mounds would have provided food to the monks in the form of doves (both meat and eggs) and rabbits.

By the 17th century it appears to have been converted for use as a prospect tower – an isolated building with commanding views to demonstrate the landowner’s wealth and status.

Parking for several cars is available at N51º 06.446 W002º 27.192 and the cache is a short walk away at N51º 06.530 W002º 27.158. The cache is a very small lock & lock box suitable for very small swaps and geocoins.
