Geocache Description:

.

Special Notice:

The Fall Cache Bonanza format has been changed substantially since the event was first published online in August. Final details were posted here on Friday, September 15th. Among the changes, the AMR component is now an optional part of the event. If you have not visited this site since then, please read this entire page carefully.

About the Bonanza:

A special running of the Amazing Marlborough Race (AMR) (visit link) will coincide with the release of nearly 30 new caches during the Fall Cache Bonanza on Saturday, September 30, 2006.

Details of the new caches will be provided initially only to those participating in this event, providing numerous FTF opportunities for those who sign up.

A pre-release gathering will be held at Jericho Hill in Marlborough, the parking location for the AMR, where area cachers will be invited to come and submit their nominations for the 2006 Cache Excellence Awards.

If it rains, the event will be rescheduled for the following Saturday at the same time.

The Gathering:

To celebrate this bulk release of new caches and to honor the efforts of the area's cache owners, all are invited to gather at 9:00 AM at Jericho Hill to share and exchange caching exploits and enjoy light morning snacks and drinks.

The Awards:

As of this writing, there are nearly 200 caches within ten miles of ground zero for this event. That represents much work on the part of cache owners and a lot of enjoyment for those who have logged finds. So it seems like a good idea to honor the work of the area's top cache publishers.

Event attendees are invited to submit three nominees in the following categories:

Most enjoyable cache - had a great time doing it.
Most clever cache concept, puzzle or container.
Most challenging cache - hard but was still a lot of fun.
Top Family Cache - enjoyable for all ages, especially kids.

To be eligible for an award, the posted coordinates for a cache must be 10 miles or less from the posted coordinates for this event. You do not need to submit three nominees in each category but all nominees should be ordered 1-3, with 10 points awarded to each first place nominee, 6 points award to each second place nominee and 3 points award to all third place nominees. You may not nominate your own cache or the cache of any family member.

If you are unable to attend the event, please join in anyway. Nominations may be sent to Emmett by email between now and the day of the event. If you decide to send nominations by email, please post a note here indicating you participated, but do not make your votes public in this forum.

The results will be published on this page within a week after the event is held. A public Bookmark will be created to recognize the winners.

Also, when submitting nominations, whether online ar at the event, feel free to add descriptive comments. Some of these will be published as well.

The Caching:

As mentioned above, nearly 30 new caches will be released the day of this event. Complete instructions for all the new caches will be provided to event participants at 9:00 AM in the Jericho parking lot. If you want to participate in the event but cannot make it at 9:00 AM, you’ll be able to obtain instructions for the new caches later in the day. Details will be provided later.

Fall Cache Bonanza participants will have both Saturday and Sunday to seek out these new caches before they are released to the general public. Participants can post notes here during the weekend of the event to notify others of the caches they have found. The online cache pages for each new cache will be published around 8:00 PM on Sunday to allow participants an opportunity to officially post their find/DNF logs.

The Competition:

For those who enjoy a little competition, points may be accumulated by competing in the Amazing Marlborough Race (AMR) on the event day and by finding the new caches to be released. The points will be tallied at the end of the weekend to determine a Fall Cache Bonanza winner.

Each find logged will be worth the following minimum “find points:”

First to find - 30 points
Second to find – 20 points
Third to find – 10 points
All others – 5 points

Plus - each cache will have a rating (ie. multiplier) that will take into consideration the length of the hike and the difficulty of the find. The rating will be multiplied by the “find points” to determine the total point value achieved for any given find.

For example, “Deception II” is a challenging cache with a rating of 3.0. The FTF for this cache will receive 30 (find points) x 3.0 (rating) = 90 total points. The STF will earn 60 points, the TTF will earn 30 points and all others will earn 15 points.

By comparison, you can drive to within 20 feet of the “Callahan North Supply Station” cache and its an easy find, so this gets a rating of 0.5, resulting in point totals of 15 for FTF, 10 for STF, 5 for TTF and 2.5 for all others.

While the AMR course is not difficult, finishing fast or in the top three will be a significant accomplishment. Consequently, for the sake of this competition, it will have a rating of 6.0.

Several caches of significant difficulty and/or length will be include among the new caches to allow those who do not receive AMR points a chance to score big elsewhere.

About the Amazing Marlborough Race:

If you are not familiar with AMR, it is set up much like TV’s Amazing Race, only instead of touring the world with a map, you’ll compete on a local course with your GPS.

The posted coordinates will get you to the designated parking for the AMR. The Fall Cache Bonanza gathering will begin at 9:00 AM. The race will begin at 9:30 AM.

The AMR course will be set up to allow up to five entries (individuals or teams) to start at the same time. Those who plan to use bikes will start 30 minutes later at 10:00 AM. When you post a note to sign-up, please indicate if you will be biking in places where a bike would save time.

Since there will be strength in numbers, individual cachers are encouraged to pair up with each other to make a more formidable team. Pairs are welcome to unite and form a more fearsome foursome.

Start times will be based on a first-come, first-serve basis and spots may be claimed by posting a note on this page. If sign-ups exceed the available slots, additional start times will be staggered by 15 minutes.
