The Tennis Grand Slam The tennis grand slam is made up of major four tournaments played on four different surfaces over the course of the year. The U.S. Open is played each September in New York City.
The open is played on hard courts in a cacaphonous city atmosphere. The tournament features night matches under the lights often before a boisterous crowd. John McEnroe once famously blamed the smell of hamburgers cooking at a nearby restaurant for a loss.
Grand slam tournaments can be grueling. The men play best 3- out of 5-set matches, which can last from 2-6 hours. These long matches leave plenty of room for ebb and flow. A competitor who feels on top of everything at one moment can suddenly find things spiraling out of control. With 128 competitors in the field, a champion must win 7 matches to eliminate all competition and claim the prize.
In a similar vein, this Grand Slam cache is no park-and-grab. Expect to put in a little extra work to log this. When you do locate the cache, you'll find some information about one of the past champions of this tournament. You might want to note that information for future use.
