Steep hike up a well-marked trail.
This 60-acre forest tract was densely populated in the nineteenth century. The name of the hill derives from the family with seven daughters who lived at the top of the hill. On washing day, their petticoats hanging out to dry could be seen from miles around.
In the mid-20th century, there was a ski area with a tow rope and a snack bar on the hill.
Now if you poke around, you'll find interesting cellar holes and who knows what else.
To get there: From Route 9 in downtown Williamsburg, go a short distance up Petticoat Hill Road, which starts between the post office and the Williams House, and park at the Trustees of Reservations sign soon on the left. Follow the white blazes up the trail, and on the way back, follow the white signs, which take you in a loop.
