Michigan Spirit Quest #10 "Honest Elisha" Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

-Rusty-: Greetings,

While Geocaching.com would like to continue to hold the location for you, doing so blocks other cachers from placing caches in the area. We feel that this cache has been disabled for a period of time exceeding what is reasonable for the area, and thus I regretfully must archive it.

If you are able to get out and replace the cache, simply drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. I will be more than happy to take a look at it to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting.

Thank you,

Rusty...

“Michigan Spirit Quest”

The Michigan Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries built by MICHIGAN Pioneers. This series is inspired by and is a continuation of the Indiana Spirit Quest caches created by SixDogTeam. In just over two and a half years, the SPIRIT QUEST has grown to over five hundred and fifty caches and the hiders have grown to twenty-five cacher teams in 3 states and one province, most of which are comprised of Dogs and their Humans. Over 1,000 cachers have logged over 20,000 finds. One cache machine found 102 ISQ caches in a single day (daylight hours only).

Michigan Spirit Quest #10

"HONEST ELISHA"

Welcome to North Gilead Cemetery, Branch Co., MI. This cemetery has many old, beautiful stones honoring the local pioneers and veterans buried here. While researching the cemetery, I ran across a story one man buried here that stuck in my head. He wasn't a wealthy man. He wasn't a soldier who died in battle. He was just an average business man. But he represents an moral that I think is lacking in many people today – HONESTY. That man is Elisha B. Williams, d: Mar 15, 1884.

The tale as it appears in History of Branch County, Michigan: Elisha B. Williams once wished to use $100 in his business, and went to Abishai Sanders to borrow that amount. Mr. Sanders was at work at a distance from the house, and, when Mr. Williams had made known his errand, said to him, "I guess I can let you have it. You'll find the pocket-book on the mantel-shelf over the fireplace. Go and get it, take out what you want, and then put the book back." Mr. Williams preferred to have him go and get it, but he refused to do so. So, he went to the house, took down the pocket-book, which contained $500, and counted out the amount he wanted. Mrs. Sanders was present, but refused to get the money, saying she was "no hand to count it." When Mr. Williams went to pay back the borrowed money, he found Mr. Sanders in the woods, and tendered him the money. Sanders refused to take it, saying, "You borrowed the money of the pocket-book, now you must pay it back to the pocket-book." And so he did.
