I was studying
the Nisene Marks trail map as I prepared to go to Hoffman's
Historic Site and I saw a reference to an overlook. Curiosity
won me over, and I chose to continue my hike past Hoffman's.
Luckily I also came prepared to leave a cache behind.
You have a couple of choices for approaches, but either way you
choose, you are in for a good hike.
If you come up
the West Ridge Trail from its junction with the Stump Gap
Trail, you'll come to a part of the trail that is very exposed
to the east. As you just come back into the trees, look for
the sign post and the little trail that goes east that leads
to "Thompson's Bench". The cache is hidden along the trail to
the bench, within 100 feet of the bench.
Be sure to bring the hint with you in case you have poor
reception.
