Geocache Description:

Easy ½ mile hike followed by scramble up rock to peak of St. Peter’s Dome (415 foot elevation gain). Cache is located just off the main trail.

This is a traditional cache (ammo box) near a peak visible from much of Colorado Springs (St. Peter’s Dome). The view of Colorado Springs and the surrounding mountains is spectacular. Compared to other peaks in the area, this one is relatively easy – 415 ft. elevation gain. Park near the obvious lookout off of Old Stage Road (N 38o 44.559, W 104o 54.786) (approx. 7.7 miles from the intersection of Cheyenne Mtn. Zoo Rd. and Old Stage Road [FS RD 368]). The trail starts just past the lookout on the right (north) side of the road. The first 1/2 mile is an easy hike to a switchback. After a short bit of climbing you will reach a cliff wall (N38o 44.820, W 104o 54.668) where the trail forks to the right and left. Take it (ie the left fork). From this point there are several scrambling paths to the true summit (N 38o 44.843, W 104o 54.679). The cache is located in a Coloradoan version of mini-Stonehenge just before the summit. Haven’t done this hike in inclement weather, but the rocks may get slippery. If you mistakenly end up on the right fork, it leads to a dramatic rock outcropping [visible from the true summit] which should probably only be attempted by true technical climbers.
