Geocache Description:

This is a small cache with room for the log, a pencil and maybe a small coin. The cache is located at the coordinates listed and is about 0.85 miles from the parking coordinates Difficulty: 2 Terrain: 2.5

The cache is located on the Columbia Trail in the Long Valley section of Washington Township, Morris County. The Columbia Trail is a rail trail in New Jersey created from portions of the former Central Railroad of New Jersey High Bridge Branch stretching from High Bridge, in Hunterdon County, to Flanders, in Morris County. Built in 1876, the branch was used for passenger and freight traffic. The type of freight most commonly moved was iron ore from mines in Morris County to be used in the foundries at High Bridge or Wharton.

In 1976, the branch was deemed redundant by its new owner Conrail and the rails were ripped up. Since then, it has been a recreational trail serving the surrounding communities. In the mid-1990s, Columbia Gas Company laid an underground gas pipeline the length of the right-of-way from Morris County to High Bridge. The trail and bridges were resurfaced in 2004.

The Hunterdon County Department of Parks and Recreation and Morris County Department of Parks and Recreation now operate and maintain the trail. The trail is great for hiking and biking. Here are some links of interest:

Easy parking can be found at the trail head for Patriots Path section in Schooleys Mountain Park. This is also the Langdon Palmer Fishing Access to the Gillette Trail located off Fairview Ave in Long Valley (coordinates N40 47.686 W074 46.213). You can access and follow the trail right to the cache. This is a well marked trail that is easily accessible but requires a bit of a walk (or short bike ride) to get there. While there are other ways to access the trail, this is the closest and most appropriate. We wanted to provide the opportunity for people not familiar with this area to experience these trails.

Keep an ear open…the cache’s name refers the sounds that you may hear as you approach the cache; particularly in the summer.
