Geocache Description:

Looking for a challenge? Tired of the “easy” caches? Heres a “Summit” cache to have a go at…

Like the first rocky religion cache, being a rock climber you seek out new cliffs and rocky areas to climb by looking at topographical maps etc. etc… This is called “cathedral rock”.

Getting to it is a bit like a mini Everest / Himalayan mountaineering summit attempt, except it’s easily achievable (3 k’s return walk) but you do need to know the route to get to the top.

Originally I was going to just list the cache GZ but decided that was just way too cruel so heres a “Pseudo” mountaineers route description to help you out and make it “an easy summit”.

Following the suggested route gives a good chance of summiting but unforseen difficulties and delays could be encountered such as snowstorms, frostbite, high winds, blizzards, and not forgetting Yeti’s can disrupt progress too…

Get yourself to Melrose
At the southern end of Melrose you will find a Gate (Base Camp) at S 32 49.664 E 138 10.938, A Mawson trail cycle ring route goes through the gate. Nearby there is also a street sign pointing to “Cathedral Rock”
You will need to park here.
The gate is not locked so Mountain Bikers can access the area.
(But DO NOT drive past here and DON’T block the drive way to the nearby house!).

From here you are entering private land which the landowner happily allows Walkers and Mountain Bikers access (bring your MTbike too!) This is a renowned MTB area with several bike trails and walking trails too…

Follow the 4x4 track / Mawson trail.
To acclimatise to altitude for your climb and If you want to see what your getting yourself into, Detour up to S 32 49.727 E 138 10.850 to see “The Summit” in the distance its not very far away at all (Approx 1.5 k’s)
NOTE: your summiting “Cathedral Rock” not the Mountain behind it!

Continue on up the 4x4 trail till you reach a faint track branching off at S 32 49.600 E 138 10.622 Follow this a short distance and then head west up a spur to “Camp One“ at S 32 49.579 E 138 10.461 where you will find the Mount Remarkable National Park boundary fence Here there is a heavy railway iron post where you can easily get over the fence.

Cross the fence and continue up the spur keeping to the northern side (follow animal pad) after approx 150 meters you will come to some low “shrubs“ at S 32 49.556 E 138 10.380 that you will need to “push” through.

On the other side you will come to a “Scree Slope” at S 32 49.556 E 138 10.380 follow the animal pad across the rocks to a large rivergum “Camp Two” at S 32 49.507 E 138 10.321

Drop down and across the creek to another obvious large rivergum

“The Khumbu Glacier section”
From the second rivergum pick your way up to the rock face and follow an animal pad up and around the “front” (eastern) side of the rock until you come to a break in the rock wall “Camp Three”
Whilst at ”Camp Three“ Look up on the cliff face in front of you (North)… If your lucky you might see the falcons that nest on the cliff face where the obvious “white stain” is
(But DON’T Disturb them!!!)

From ”Camp Three“ head up left (south west) through the break in the rock to the “South Col” at S 32 49.460 E 138 10.321

From the “South Col“ follow the “Hillary Ridge” up the obvious rocky ridge line to the ”False Summit” at S 32 49.432 E 138 10.330

Once reaching the ”False Summit” at the top of the “Hillary Ridge” its approx 40 easy “flat” meters to “The Summit” at S 32 49.432 E 138 10.340

Take the time to drink in the feeling of a successful summit, enjoy the view, and have a rest and a drink (It’s a great spot to have lunch) before returning to Base Camp via the same route.

Please note:
This cache involves a few short steep inclines and some “off track” cross-country walking.
Make sure you have good shoes or boots, and take some water.
The rocks and terrain in this area can become extremely slippery when wet, Take Care!!
Give yourself plenty of time / daylight to return, 3 - 4 hours should be plenty.
If taking kids stick together! Don’t let anyone get lost! (Its possible)
There is NO Traversing of cliff edges or any “dangerous sections” Its quite safe.
You DON’T NEED any specialised equipment like Ropes, Yaks, Sherpa’s, O2, etc.
Just a sense of adventure and a bit of determination
