Note: Do not
park on the highway to access this cache. There is
ample parking and safer access from the 25th Side Road (north
side of Arthur St (old highway 11/17.))
The caches in the Lakehead Scale Solar System
(LSSS) series will take you on a scale tour of our solar
system. Each planet/cache is the correct scale distance from
the scale Sun (give or take a few meters – to find a good view
of the Sun, or hiding spot for the cache) and has a
representation of the planet's correct scale size.
At almost 15.4km from the center of the LSSS, Saturn (the scale
planet, not the cache) is about 125cm in diameter, that's almost 4
feet exactly. This planet has a prominent system of rings,
consisting mostly of ice particles and bits of rocky debris and
dust. The edge of these rings would make a 8 foot in diameter
circle around the scale planet.
The scale Sun is clearly visible from this cache as you look
north to the hills. Bring your binoculars for a good look and idea
of the vast emptiness of space.
All orbital distances, planet and Sun diameters in the Lakehead
Scale Solar System are 1:9,279,333. That means the actual Sun is
over 9-million times larger than the 15m one used in this
series.
