Geocache Description:

Located on a Nature trail at Percy Quin State Park. Over one mile of twisting trail through the swamp. In summer a 5/5. Do not leave cache on ground for high water.

This cache is named for the river that feeds the lake (you will see it at the cache) as well as a bird seen while hiding the cache in July 2006. Favorite trail of Boy Scouts. You are going about 3 miles round trip (0.68M as the Crow Flies from parking near tennis courts). DO NOT leave container on ground - it will float off!

The Acadian Flycatcher is a small greenish flycatcher with a white eye-ring. It has a brownish olive back, dark wings with white wing bars, and a whitish throat and belly. It is found in woodlands near water such as along rivers or in swamps. It eats mostly flies, also mosquitoes, small moths, flying ants and small beetles. It can hover and even fly backwards!

Calls: Most common call is a high pweest, like a squeeze-toy; Song: PEET-sah, usually accented on first syllable. Sometimes called a “pizza” bird.

The Acadian Flycatcher arrives in April and goes south in October. It likes mature forests both here on the breeding grounds and the tropical wintering grounds of Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. The nest a shallow, thin cup of fine materials held together with spider and insect silk, in the fork of a small branch, usually over water. It nests here, so this habitat is very important!

Other birds near this cache: Winter: E. Phoebe, Golden Crowned Kinglet, Pine Warber, Brown-headed Nuthatch, White-throated Sparrow.

All year: Pileated Woodpecker, Red-Shouldered Hawk, Great Blue Heron, Red-bellied Woodpecker, N. Flicker.

Summer: Wood Thrush (great place to hear as you come down the hill toward the boardwalk), Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Kentucky Warbler, Summer Tanager, Acadian flycatcher!
