Geocache Description:

A great way to enjoy the beautiful coastline of Maine is to explore its islands. You don't need a private yacht or even a kayak although these are certainly great ways to do it. Many of Maine's islands including Long Island, Vinal Haven, Isleborough and Chebeague Island (to name only a few) are accessible by ferry boat. Chebeague Island is in Casco Bay and is accessible by a 15 minute ferry ride from Cousins Island or a 1.5 hour ride from Portland. The following directions are from the CTC ferry boat which will get you there in 15 minutes. Bring your bicycle for a day you won't forget. Checkout www.Chebeague.org for lots more info including ferry schedules, tide charts and rates.

To get to the cache from the stone warf, which is on the north end of the island, go down the South road to the end where a 4 way intersection is at N43 42.899 W070 07.356. It's about a five mile ride. Turn left down the dirt road to Deer Point. Ditch your bike in the clearing before you get to the water and hike the short distance to the shore. When you get to the cache location you will see an iron rod in the rock. This was used in the 1940's to anchor a net that spanned across to Long Island to the south. This was one of two nets that were used during WWII to keep German U-boats from getting into mainland waters and to protect Naval vessels who came in for crew rest days on Little Chebeague. It is also widely known that these u-boats preyed mainly on commercial shipping all across the Atlantic and these nets would protect Portland Harbor while these ships were most vulnerable.

As for the cache. Since it is named Message in a bottle, you should imagine that you are on a deserted island, either stranded or by choice, and you wanted to put a message in a bottle, what would you write? Is it a message to the world? Is it a message to a person from your past or present? Someone maybe who you never met? Write it in this log and log it on the website. Enjoy the Island!
