Short hike in Stow on the Spindle Hill/Wheeler Pond conservation land. Could be very difficult in snow. Be wary of thorns, poison ivy, etc. and respect abutters’ property Parking on Gates Lane at N42º26.041 W071º31.412.
This is sort of the first cache I have placed (we relocated the original Wheeler Pond Creature Cache to keep it all on public land). Any comments would be appreciated. This is a two-stage multi cache, all within conservation land boundaries. The cache is filled with animals. Please stick to the theme!
You’ll explore Stow’s Spindle Hill/Wheeler Pond conservation area to find my cache. Conservation land boundaries are clearly marked; although slightly overgrown in places the trails are also clearly marked with red or orange paint blazes.
The conservation land has both geographic and historical significance. Spindle Hill, the second highest point in Stow, is named for the textile industry spindles that used to be cut from trees on the hill. An old ski trail runs down its east side. In the 1880’s Wheeler Pond provided power for Wheeler’s Sawmill. Up until the mid-1930’s, blocks of ice were harvested from the pond in winter and used to preserve food in iceboxes before refrigerators were invented.
Have fun, and Good Luck!!!!!
