A small tupperware box gives Blackrod it's first cache.
If you suffer from equinophobia then leave this one alone!
During the civil war of the 17th century Bolton was a centre of Puritanism and a Parliamentarian outpost surrounded by Royalist areas. Prince Rupert's army of 10,000 men were joined by troops under the leadership of the Earl of Derby, and stormed the town on May 28th 1644.
During the battle 1500 local civillians died and 700 more were taken prisoner. It become known as the Bolton massacre and was the only massacre of civilians during the civil war.
Blackrod was the only part of Bolton loyal to the king so inevitably some of the fighting spilled out here. This cache overlooks the battle ground. Its placed at an area known locally as Rigby Hill,(the royalist troops where lead by Colnel Rigby). The battle took place in the valley between Rigby Hill and Tuckers Hill which lies to the South East.
As well as having historical interest its a great viewpoint which is relatively unknown (I live very close and I only discovered it recently myself), on a clear day you can see what I think are the hills of the southern peak district.
The cache is reachable on public footpaths but they are seldom used and go through gaps in hedges which are thorny so don't wear short sleaves. I have put a child friendly icon because there is a play area nearby just off Half Acre Lane. My little lad (aged 3) managed to get through the hedge gaps but do take care with little ones and its best to leave the buggy at home, park at the community center at the top of Greenbarn way.
