Geocache Description:

An easy cache at an English-style cricket oval. The oval is used for AFL games in winter so there's a chance to enjoy some cricket or football action whilst visiting this cache.

The Man Born in 1929 at Lisarow on the New South Wales central coast, Alan Davidson carved his name as one of Australia’s finest all-rounders, noted for his left-arm seamers and strong lower-order batting.

In his 44 test matches between 1953 and 1963, he took 186 wickets, scored 1,328 runs and took 42 catches. Possibly his greatest feat came in the first Test at  Brisbane against the West Indies where he was the first person to score 100 runs and take 10 wickets in a single match.

A classy left  hander, Alan started his career as a slow left arm bowler, later changing to a fast bowler to make more of his tall thick set frame. He played in 6 Ashes series -  three at home and three overseas.

Richie Benaud once said of Davidson “I have never played with or against a more penetrative bowler .

For the 5 years after 1957/8, whenever the side was in trouble, we always looked for Davidson and seldom did he fail.” (Willow Patterns 1969).

Alan Davidson was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame at the 2004 Allan Border Medal dinner in Melbourne. Davidson, (then 74), was the 20th inductee since the Hall of Fame was introduced. He has also been awarded an OBE for services to sport.

The Ground The Alan Davidson Oval is home of the South Sydney District Cricket Club. The club house contains multiple function rooms, a fully equipped bar, air conditioned player and umpire rooms, an elevator, a fully equipped canteen, scorers room, and an observation deck.  Light towers allow day/night matches to be played (and provide sufficient illumination for a night-time cache hunt). An electronic scoreboard and a superb playing surface complete the facilities.

The Cache The instructions for finding the cache are hidden at the above waypoint. The cache will be easier to find if you know the overall dimensions of a cricket pitch and the relative positions of the fieldsmen and umpires in relation to the batsman on strike. NO SWAPS or TBs PLEASE as they ae likely to be stolen.

The Park

The Alan Davidson Oval lies within the Northern section of Sydney Park, managed by Sydney City Council. Dogs are not permitted on the oval at any time, within 10 meters of a children's play area or near food preparation, picnic and barbeque areas. They are allowed off-leash between 6.00PM and 8.00AM in this (Northern) area of the park and off-lease at any time in the Southern park areas.

The photo opposite shows Davidson bowling Geoff Pullar at the MCG during the second Test against England. Note the (arrowed) position of the bails!
