Geocache Description:

The cache is right next to the trail. Altitude is only a few feet different than the parking lot elevation, the cache would be rated a 1 star if people wouldn't get so confused about which side of the trail the cache is on. The cache is a small plastic container inside a plastic bag that has some goodies and a logbook in it. Please try not to get confused about which side of the trail the cache is on...To see the aerial photo of the cache site, go into the gallery.

Awhile ago before Anacortes was considered a town, people thought that the city of Seattle was going to be built on this island. Fidalgo Island was a good location for a big city because of all the water that could be used for drinking water in the six lakes on the island, and because of the big port, ships could easily dock and transfer goods to land. People laid a railroad right through Anacortes thinking that after they had finished building Seattle, they would need a railroad for transportation. That railroad as many locals know, was never really used and of course Seattle wasn't built on the island. Those rails were recently taken out and now where the railroad used to lie, there is a beatiful paved bike trail called the Thompson Trail. After people knew that Seattle wasn't going to be on Fidalgo Island, the newly formed City of Anacortes got the land and turned it into the Anacortes Community Forest Lands where this geocache now sits.
PLEASE DO NOT DISTURB the native plants and wildlife while searching for this cache. A pretty good hint of the cache location has been provided to help reduce the impact of searching in the wrong place. The City of Anacortes has been kind enough not to remove the cache from this amazing and delicate place. Please return the favor by being absolutely respectful of the resources on which you are standing. Pack out any litter found in the area. Go to Anacortes Community Forest Lands for more information on the City of Anacortes parks system.
