Tallahassee was proud when a small local company, Bannermen, won the prestigious contract to supply flags for a UN special conference on global positioning.
But disaster awaited, in the slumbering form of new employee Geoffrey P. Starspangle. Starspangle fell asleep at the cutting-and-binding machine during the final critical phase of production, leaving a variegated mess.
Before the error was caught, the flags were packed, shipped to New York, and unfurled on live international television to an extremely confused global audience.
All was well in the end, however. Astute conference delegates realized that the motley flags pointed to the exact location of a geocache.
