This Cache is near a public boat ramp at a beautiful lake on the Key Peninsula.
The Key Peninsula is home to many small towns. Most began as logging and fishing communities. It can be very confusing to figure out which town you are in at any one time because the offical post office addresses differ from the names of the historical communities.
After you cross the Purdy Spit, the first town is Wauna. The name was chosen by an early postmistress and is supposed to be an Indian word meaning "strong and mighty waters." The old post office at the west end of the Purdy Spit was recently demolished, despite many efforts to preserve it. The current Wauna Post Office is at the Lake Kathryn Village Shopping Center (There is some question as to whether there is or was ever a lake there).
As you continue on the highway there will still be Gig Harbor addresses almost to Key Center, where the new Vaughn Post Office is. A right turn at the yellow flashing light leads to Vaughn. Originally a farming community, many of the the men found that logging was more lucrative and left the farming to the women. The Civic Center, formerly a school, is where many community events are now held and is also home to a historical museum.
A left turn in Key Center would take you down to Glen Cove, where most of the supplies were shipped to the fledgling communities. All that remains is the Historic Glen Cove Hotel and the YMCA Camp Seymour.
Continue south through Key Center and although the street addresses are Lakebay here, the town of Lakebay is still several miles down the road.
You will need to turn right on Jackson Lake Rd. to get to the cache. It is at a boat ramp administered by the department of Fish and Wildlife. Those who have fishing licenses will have the required parking permit.
If you were to continue down the peninsula you would reach the town of Home, formerly the "Home Colony." Originally it was a group of anarchists, communists, food faddists, freethinkers, nudists and others that did not fit into mainstream society. In 1902 the Home Post office was closed by postal inspectors and moved to Lakebay, after an article by the postmistress advocating free love was published in an anarchist newspaper. The Post Office moved back to Home in 1958 but kept the Lakebay name.
There are a couple of nice State Parks on the Key Peninsula, Penrose on the east shore and Joemma on the west.
If you are up for an even longer drive, the last two communities are Lakebay and Longbranch.
