"Walk in the footsteps of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The corps put many unemployed men to work constructing bridges, trails, roads, and buildings during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Enrollees also fought wildfire and reforested burnt-over areas. They created and left behind many monuments of their work and experiences.
During the Great Depression, a CCC side camp was stationed near the Hamma Hamma River. One of the CCC projects, between 1936-37, was the construction of the Hamma Hamma Guard Station including the garage, register station and the fences that border the site. It was used as an administrative site for Forest Service fire and trail crews. The skill and craftsmanship that went into the construction have been recognized with this unique building being nominated to the National Register of Historic Places."
The cache is located along the CCC Living Legacy Interpretive Trail in the Hamma Hamma Recreation area, about 14 miles North of Hoodsport. You can access the trial from the Hamma Hamma campground at N 47°35.736 / W 123°07.354 -- or from Hamma Hamma Road at N 47°35.493 / W 123°06.951. In either case you'll walk less than 1/3 of a mile to get to the cache location.
An excellent day hike for families, this trail runs along the Hamma Hamma River, then loops around past the old Guard Station and back to the campground. Interpretive signs tell the story of the CCC.
The cache is a small metal ointment can. Inside is a log book, small pencil and a bunch of sticker sheets. Please let me know if it needs more stickers.
****Congrats to Geofamily_extended for being FTF!****
