Geocache Description:

Northern end of Bradfield Park.

In the centre of this park is an unusual drinking fountain. If you look at the sides of it only two have drinking taps, the other two have small water filled troughs at the bottom. These troughs were purpose built for dogs to drink from.

In the thirties, like today, dogs weren’t always loved or thought about by local councils. In 1941 Jessie Broomfield left money in her will specifically mentioning the provision of dog troughs ‘in and around the City of Sydney’. This drinking fountain was built in 1953. Another dog fountain in Moore Park was “relocated” to nowhere in 1999 so my research indicates this one is the last drinking fountain bequeathed by Miss Broomfield that remains in the city of Sydney.

CACHE LOCATION DETAILS

1.It is an easy reach from the grassed area. Just sit down and reach out your hand. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THE GARDEN. We are focussed on preserving the environment of all our cache sites and don't place caches in areas which are likely to cause damage.

2.The cache IS NOT AGAINST THE RAILWAY WALL, nor is it covered by rocks nor is it a feature of the watering or other garden infrastructure so no dismantling is required.

3. Please replace cache exactly where you found it...this one has a habit of moving 5 and 10 metres from its original safe position. The coordinates for this cache were taken over 1 hour but some GPSrs seem to get different results to others in this location due to the urban environment and the rail line. Phone GPSs will not be accurate in this area. If you find the coordinates seem out please include the coordinates you get and GPSr model in your log to help others.

It is geokid friendly. However both geokids and geohounds need to be kept close as the park has busy roads nearby. The container is a 400ml container so small swaps only. No food swaps or swaps sourced free from the nearby hotels please.

Since we have placed this cache, (in our honour..no not really) the council have erected a new addition to the fountain, a statue of a fox terrier who stands proudly erect. Although we sometimes bag our politicians, its amazing what our local councillors will do to keep important and sentimental parts of our local history alive!
