Geocache Description:

A fun and fairly simple hide. Cache is a film canister right off of the road.

The San Geronimo Lodge was built in 1925 in the style of a grand old lodge, with vast common rooms, high ceilings with traditional vigas, rambling verandas and winding portals. The Witts’ homesteaded this land and it was their daughter (Clara) who turned the homestead into a lodge in 1925. Clara had a sister named Minnie and Minnie is Kathleen’s great grandmother. Walter Witt is buried next to Kit Carson. Later in life, Clara’s father had a new girlfriend and he willed his land to her. When the girlfriend died, she willed most of the land to the church where Our Lady of Guadalupe church now resides which is next (west) to the plaza. Kathleen’s Grandfather worked at the lodge for a short period during the depression until he found out that he would have to work for stock because they couldn’t make payroll. When he was 15 he only wanted money and had no use for stock. Today, if you look along the Kit Carson highway you can see the old entrance. It’s a little intimidating but it is there. You can also get to the lodge using the paved streets (Witt Rd.) and there is a sign that says “Historic San Geronimo Lodge” turn here… The cache is near the San Geronimo lodge sign. On another note that 15 year old boy went to the Grand Canyon a couple of years later and became a mechanic for Fred Harvey. He met and fell in love with a Fred Harvey girl. It was against the rules for the Harvey employees to date so they got married, quit there jobs and moved back to Taos.
