Franklin resident Gail Lembo purchased a number of old diaries at a yard sale one Saturday in 1991. Realizing she’d discovered nearly a half century of South Franklin history she spent 6½ years transcribing, editing and annotating more than 9,000 daily entries, gathering maps, deeds, and photos and finally had everything printed and bound in 3 volumes: “The Wadsworth Diaries” (The Diaries of George M. Wadsworth 1857-1893). She then DONATED the limited printing to the People of Franklin.

The diaries record the daily life of George Wadsworth, his family, friends, and neighbors in the late 19th century. George made only a single entry regarding his own wedding, but devoted nearly a week of entries (and saved clippings) regarding the tragic events of January 18, 1859. The Boston Daily Traveller headline read:
DISAPPOINTED LOVE, MURDER AND SUICIDE - THE DOUBLE TRAGEDY AT SOUTH FRANKLIN.
George recorded “more than a thousand” attended the services for Susan Whiting (age 16) and “a great many there from all around” at Jonathan Wales (age 28) funeral the following day. (Click the headline link for the complete 1859 diary. Transcriptions and diary entries are side by side - scans of newspaper articles are at the end of the .pdf document)

These books are fascinating. The Wadsworth Village and Neighborhood map prompted me to explore the area last year.
Wadsworth was a busy place with its RR Station, Store, Post Office, Shop, and Farm.

The block wall shown in the old photo of the Store/PO with Farmhouse still exists but the buildings are gone. I was shocked to see how CLOSE the RR tracks were to the former store!
