Lake Emily's Camping on the Yellowstone Trail Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

zuma!: Revisited, and decided to archive, due to all the new caches in the park since I placed this, and the fact it doesnt fit the model of the other YST caches in the series.

I will archive this one, and open up this space for another cache placed by someone else. This is a great park, and there is room for a few more caches here.

Geocache Description:

One of the routes of the historic Yellowstone Trail was the road that is now marked as "Old 18" between here and Steven's Point. You can follow Old 18 from Steven's Point to Ameryst Junction, and be on a very scenic road, that was one of the routes of the Yellowstone Trail.

Lake Emily County Park is a beautiful place, and a place that tourists in the 1920s would have stopped to camp for the night. The first waypoint is near the beach, where people still swim. The second waypoint's coordinate's are in a micro that you will find, after a short search.

Both Amherst and Amherst Junction were on the later Yellowstone Trail, and you will need to get off the Highway 10 bypass to see these historic towns.

In Portage County there were two variations of the trail between Amherst and Stevens Point, one using County Trunk B, then up Post Road in Plover to Church Street to Main Street.

The other route followed what eventually became Highway 10, but represents a mish-mash of roads as the Highway 10 route has evolved into its present route. Today, portions of the old Yellowstone Trail follow 10 but most are on sections of town and county roads. The best route, going west, is to leave Amherst on School Road, going to Amherst Junction on County Trunk Q and then taking Old Highway 18 west as it becomes Sixth Street. At Custer Road, go north to Old Highway 18 and then west on Old 18 to Highway 10. Then follow 10 west, around Stevens Point and through Junction City to County Trunk N east of Milladore, continuing north on N to Yellowstone Drive, a dirt road that is still a vestige of the old Yellowstone Trail.
