Located off Rt 52. Flat terrain.
play area, picnic pavilions, restrooms and several other things already in place. It is located off Rt 52 in the town of Shawangunk. The park is called Verkeerder Kill Park.
In 2001, during construction, ancient artifacts were discovered and therefore stopped construction of the park. Archaelogist were called in and they discovered hunting spears that are believed to date back to 2500 to 1500BC. As the Archaelogist continued their search, they also found artifacts such as arrow heads and tools belonging to Native Indians. Although they are still learning who these Indians were they believe the artifacts date back to 900 to 1300 AD or known as the Woodland period. Much of the area was destroyed during construction of the park, though it is believed there are still artifacts still buried there.
Now in construction are the hiking trails around the park, so take a look for yourselves. Please be courteous of the area, don’t litter. Yes the park is open to the public, so stealth is required when searching for the caches, especially while there is sports going. Have fun and as always happy caching.
