INDIANA GHOST TOWN
QUEST
The Indiana Ghost Town
Quest series of geocaches will take you to towns of yester-year
that no longer exist or are near extinction. Inspired by the
Indiana Spirit Quest cemetery series, this series will take you to
remnant sites as well as vacant sites where towns once existed,
hopefully exposing a part of our historic past to the
visitor.
These towns were once
important centers of trade but due to various reasons now are gone.
These reasons can include changes in local industry, changes in
trade routes, or even changes in transportation. This can be as
simple as railroads replacing canals and interstates replacing
local highways.
WHERE IS IT?
INDIANA GHOST TOWN
QUEST #8:
"BROWN'S CORNERS"
Brown's Corners is a Class D GHOST TOWN
in Rock Creek Township, Huntington County, Indiana.
This little village was located at the
intersection of County roads 100S and 200E.
The 1866 map of the county shows about 11
buildings on the site. Early on it was called Brownsville. Moses
Brown established a sawmill here in 1848. It appears on modern maps
as "Toledo". This little ville was platted in 1875 at which time
there were two stores, a sawmill, a doctor, tile mill, post office
and three blacksmith shops as well as an IOOF Hall in
existence.
There was at one time a log shcool, which
was replaced with a frame building and still later by one of brick.
The Oddfellows Lodge had 130 members in 1932.
The name of the Post Office was changed
to Toledo in 1893, reasons uknknown. In 1928 an explosion in town
killed three men.
The 1866 Wabash Primitive Baptist Church
still stands next to Star of Hope Cemetery north of the
town.
The cache container is a plastic peanut
butter jar and is located in an area in which hunters
congregate.
Today, all that
remains are a few modern residences and a few deer prints in the
mud.
