Walter Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

G & E: After 14 years, its time to archive this one. Two years without a find is too long for a cache in the city, but don't worry, Walter will soon be back in the form of a traditional cache.

I was able to recover the final stage. I can remember the last 5 containers that we've used here but I'm sure there have been more. The hike hasn't changed much although the creek is nearly impassable at the original spot. Luckily we were able to find a place to cross downstream.

Geocache Description:

There are many secrets, mysteries and unseen things in the Whitemud Ravine. One of those mysteries is Walter. This is Walter's home.

Park near 119 Street and 9B Avenue (in the winter, park near the Brookhollow sign). The path down is straight west of where 9B ends. Do not use the Mactaggart Sanctuary path as a fence might separate you from Walter. Descend straight down the path and you will find a wonderful wilderness. The grove of small spruce trees will make you feel like a hobbit from "Lord of the Rings"! Your GPS will take you very close before poor reception causes problems. If you are approaching from the east and heading west you will have to eventually cross the creek. We were able to do so with out getting our feet wet but we had no difficulty crossing on a log. In the summer it might be easier to visit Walter from the west and head east. Walter is big and tall so you should have no difficulty finding him at any time of the year, although in the summer the mosquitoes might chase you away. In fact, don't do this cache in July as the mosquitoes will be scarier than Walter. Another route is to park in the Magrath area. There is a concrete walkway around the neighbourhood. Get as close as you can to Walter and then walk down the hill. Eventually you will find him as it is nearly a straight walk trough a large meadow. This is a much longer but also dryer route with no creek crossing necessary. Congratulations to Viajero Perdido for being first to find Walter and to migs7 for being first to find Walter in his new location!
