Several years ago, when Foxhound and I brought the Nature Hike groups down this trail we would turn around at about this point in the “trail”. Much has changed in just a few years. Perhaps you noticed a very large old tree that has now fallen not far from here. We used to call this tree “Grandfather Tree”. If you came here FROM the main part of O’Neill Regional Park, you also just pasted through a small stand of Coastal Live Oaks. Some of these trees have also fallen. One met its demise when a hive of bees overpowered one of the large limbs and sent it crashing to the ground. We were here when some of the Grounds-Keepers and a Ranger had to cut it back to re-open the trail. It was in this tree’s branches that an Owl (a Barn Owl based of feathers we’d see from time to time) used to roost. We found Owl Pellets here as further evidence. BUT, as you look around PLEASE take note of the “wonderful field” of Poison Oak that also grows here in the shade of the grand Coastal Live Oaks on BOTH sides of the trail.
No need to leave the trail. Please replace as you found and watch for muggles especially the Mountain Bikes as they appear out of “no-where”.
Cache started with Log, Assorted "native" animal species of O'Neill Regional Park, FTF $5 Target Card and assorted Ceramic critter shapes.
PLEASE, replace as found.
