Tickhill Castle Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not responded to my note I am archiving it.

Guidelines:**You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing.**

Geocache Description:

Tickhill Castle is an 11th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress, founded by Roger de Busli. After the siege in 1102, Robert Bloet, Bishop of Lincoln, founded the stone castle, when adding a curtain wall to the massive bailey rampart. Protected by a wide wet ditch and flanking the wall, is an interesting but simple early Norman gatehouse, with the remains of a 15th century barbican. On top of the high motte are the foundations of a 12th century eleven-sided keep, with projecting buttress at the angles. After Civil War slighting, the Hansby family built a large 17th century house, which may incorporate parts of the old hall.

I used to come here a lot when I was younger. Car parking is available but does get busy in summer. Tickhill castle is occasionally open to the public, but only very rarely.

The area tends to get very busy at weekends so stealth is required.

Don't forget to take some bread for the ducks!

There is a local hostelry nearby which serves food.

Logging Etiquette: Geocache hiders sometimes go through a great deal of planning to place their caches. As a result, they'd like to hear your feedback on whether you liked or disliked any aspect of the hide, the journey or location, or if you feel that some cache maintenance is required. Single word, acronym, or "copy and paste"logs may be easier when you have a lot of caches to log, but it doesn't tell the hider or other finders anything about your adventure (or lack thereof) in finding the cache. Please keep this in mind when entering your log.
