The 84 square metre main room, with a stage looks deceptively tiny from the outside, but in its heyday was a centre for many community events, including regular Saturday night dances.
The hall originally occupied a site on the nearby corner of Moa and Kea streets, and was relocated in 1989, being saved by protesters holding a dawn vigil, after demolition had actually started. It is currently owned by the City Council, and used by many community groups.
The hall’s design was heavily influenced by the California Bungalow style in keeping with the railway houses in Frankton. When traveling to and from the cache, look at the streets of similar protected railway houses in this special suburb. The hall was designed by the famous Sir George Troup, architect of many railway stations from humble stopping places to the grand Dunedin station.
The Railway Hall is build of heart rimu and matai, and includes an upstairs caretakers flat, used until 1989.
The adjacent sports club generates much muggle foot traffic, so please take care when picking up and returning the box.
The cache is a 200ml sistema box, painted camo, and contains a log book and small exchange tokens.
Please Please - Don't put the box back on the ground - it goes under water in a big puddle when it rains.. put in back on the little shelf under the ramp
Logging Recommendations
This cache, (like most of Radionut50’s hides) is NOT meant to be hard to find – so logs saying ‘easy find’ are pretty meaningless. The reason for this hide is to introduce you to this piece of our country’s great history , so logs commenting on your experience are very welcome.
