Geocache Description:

Located in the Glen Echo ravine, a city park in Columbus, Ohio. Total walk length should be around 1/2 mile. There are some stairs leading down into the ravine. The path at places could be muddy and uneven, and there are some steep banks adjoining the path, so hiking boots may be advised (although I placed the cache wearing running shoes).

For the first stage there may be muggles about, as this is a popular dog-walking park, so be discreet as always!

This multi is in two stages. The first is a microcache--open it to get a small card giving the location of the final stage. The final stage is an ammo can in a wooded area not too far from a well-beaten path. No bushwhacking required.

Park near the entrance on Cliffside Dr. or Glenmawr Ave. Parking coordinates: N40.01885 W82.99910

There is a lot of poison ivy in the woods so you should be aware of what it looks like. I dispatched most of the poison ivy in the area of the cache, but be alert!

There are some railroad tracks along one edge of the park (not near the cache). A local historical society in 1950 wrote:

"Forty years ago (1910) and prior to that time a railroad track extended to to High Street through what today is the Glen Echo Hollow and along Arcadia Avenue. All of this area around the track was covered by the buildings and kilns of the American Sewer Pipe Company."

The woods contain remnants of the kilns and other structures used by the Columbus Sewer Pipe Company.

These urban ravines in Columbus have a bit of "paranormal" lore surrounding them. The Ohio Exploration Society visited the park in 2003 and wrote:

"The park is located in one of the three ravines north of the Ohio State University Campus. In particular, the Glen Echo Ravine is in Clintonville. Originally when the ravine was developed, Parkview Drive snaked threw its earthen walls, but the road has since been removed and partly replaced by a bicycle path. But like the better known Walhalla Ravine (see Franklin County Hauntings), the Glen Echo has its fair share of legends. Ghostly figures have been seen in the creek between the Indianola Bridge and the park bridge near the middle of the park... The ghost of a gothic girl is said to hang out on or near the park bridge near the middle of the park and the ghost of a homeless man who froze to death hangs around the drainage tunnel that runs beneath the Indianola Bridge. There is another area in the park known as the Ten Pin. It is a set of concrete barriers set in the creek bed to disrupt large objects from clogging the nearby tunnel. The spirit of a witch who used to conduct ceremonies at that location supposedly haunts the area."

Maybe the presence of geocachers will generate more legends among the superstitious!

Glen Echo Park is smack on the 83rd meridian, and very close to the 40th parallel too, so you might look that benchmark up while you're at it.
