Kincaid Park Geocaching Intro Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

NorthWes: What a tough group of cachers! Battling rain and high winds for each of the three days we went afield, this group has earned high marks for their tenacity and good attitude afield.

I extend a big thank-you to the experienced cachers who came out to lend a hand during the field training: powmia, Knappling, Mysterious Wanderer, Ladybug Kids, scobey, and especially AK Beauty (who led the group of seven ladies and 3 youngsters off into the gathering darkness on the last Thursday evening with great aplomb!). Your gift of time means much to our new cacher friends!

Hope to see all of you out for our Christmas gathering!

Geocache Description:

 www.geocachealaska.org

10:00am Saturday October 7th...

Learn how to geocache during this Anchorage Parks & Recreation Activity (taught by local geocachers) at the Kincaid Chalet, 9401 West Raspberry Rd., Anchorage AK. MOA Parks Activity Fee $10.00 per person.

We begin at 10am indoors with an overview of finding geocaches online, loading coordinates into GPS units, and preparing to go afield in search of the cache itself. Gear, travel bugs, geocoins and other aspects of the game will be discussed, as well as 'etiquette' of the game and good land stewardship practices. Take-home handouts will cover details step by step, assisting in exploring beyond the introductory level.

By 11:30am we'll move outdoors with GPS units in hand to begin our journey of discovery... ending with the 'find' of an actual geocache located close nearby the chalet. A team of experienced field assistants will be on hand to ensure everyone gets as much personal attention as necessary to make their first geocaching expedition a success! Our training session will be completed by 12:30pm.

Follow-on group caching sessions will occur on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm for the next two weeks. These evening sessions will help new cachers gain confidence navigating across Kincaid Park's 1,400 acre 'backcountry' in search of the many geocaches hidden in the park. Each small group (led by an experienced cacher) will finish their 'hunt' by 7:30pm.

Participants must bring a handheld GPS unit (a team can share), spare batteries, footwear & clothing suitable for a blustery fall day at windy Kincaid Park. Geocaching is an all-weather all-season outdoor activity involving the entire family - however, for this Saturday training session please leave dogs at home. Well-behaved dogs on leash are encouraged to come along on our Thursday evening jaunts!

PLEASE NOTE - All TBs and geocoins in this event listing are placed by NorthWes for training purposes. We prefer any TBs brought to the event be placed in Kincaid Park caches before or after the event, rather than logging them into this training session - Thanks!
