Geocache Description:

The Bridges of Pacific County: Ellis Slough Bridge

The Willapa Hills Trail will eventually stretch 56.2 miles between Chehalis and South Bend, rambling through pastoral valleys to the tidewaters of Willapa Bay. Currently only a few small sections of this rail-trail are paved or graveled. The rest of the trail is available on a "use-at-your-own-risk" basis. Current projections are for work on the trail to begin during or after 2015. Presently, for those that want to push the envelope, 32 bridges may be found along the way. We decided to push the envelope and find ways to bring you to each of them.

The Ellis Slough bridge is located midway between Raymond and East Raymond. It spans a tiny outlet just off Ellis Slough which enters the Willapa River. Allow yourself to imagine for just a minute of a quieter, slower time in history. As you stand on the bridge, imagine watching massive old growth logs floating between the pilings before entering the Willapa River and then onto the saw mills in Raymond. This bridge is one of the few cemented over on the route with an asphalted trail leading to it.

Once the finished lumber and other wood products left the mills in Raymond on route to Chehalis by train, this would have been the first bridge the trains crossed after leaving Raymond.

To keep local muggle kids busy, I have placed a decoy cache back under the bridge at the northeast end which was the original location. It's filled with pine cones and golf balls to start with. If you wish to unload any appropriate stuff, please be my guest.
