Buckeye Woods is one of my favorite parks for walking the dogs
and for rest stops on bicycle rides through Medina County. It has a
fishing pond, two playgrounds, baseball diamonds, soccer fields,
picnic tables, pavilions, and a paved bike path. The park adjoins
Schleman Nature Preserve, with miles of dirt and gravel trails
running through scenic woods. It also adjoins the Chippewa Inlet
trail, a paved bike path that runs through scenic wetlands towards
Chippewa Lake.
The coordinates of the "Buckeye Cache" are:
N41°06.FGE W081°5A.BCD
where A thru G are the answers to the corresponding
"buckeye-related" questions below. Questions A thru D are trivia
questions that can be answered in advance. Questions E thru G
require a trip to Buckeye Woods and can be answered without leaving
the bike path. The cache itself is a 3/4 quart Rubbermaid container
with room for small trade items and travel bugs. It could be in
Buckeye Woods, Schleman Nature Preserve or on the Chippewa Inlet,
but it will be within a few feet of the trail. There is no need for
bushwhacking!
A) The Ohio Buckeye tree is known
for its unique fruit (a nut that looks like a "buck's eye") and its
unique leaf. How many leaflets does the typical Ohio Buckeye leaf
have?
B) The Buckeye Trail is
a 1400-mile long trail that forms a continuous loop around the
state of Ohio. It consists of hiking trails and public roads and is
divided into sections. The "Medina Section" starts at an Ohio state
park in Lorain County, then runs eastward through Medina County and
3 Medina County Parks (but not these 3) to the Brecksville
Reservation. How many letters are in the name of the state park at
the west end of the Medina Section? (Do not include "State Park" in
the count.)
C) The "Buckeye Bullet" was Jesse
Owens, who before winning 4 gold medals in the 1936 Berlin
Olympics, won 8 NCAA Championships as an Ohio State University
athlete. He was later named Ohio State Male Athlete of the Century.
What is the last digit of the year in which Jesse Owens was
born?
D) The Ohio State Female Athlete
of the Century was Katie Smith, who won numerous awards as a
women's Buckeye basketball star. She later went on to set multiple
records in the WNBA and to win 2 Olympic Gold medals. What is the
last digit of the year in which Katie Smith won her first Olympic
Gold medal?
E) At the coordinates listed at
the top of this listing ( N41°06.177 W081°55.072) you will
find a marker that will help you answer this question: If you were
to bag the daily limit of trout at the Buckeye Woods fishing pond,
then go home and eat one of them, how many trout would you have
left?
F) At N41°06.166
W081°55.212 you will find a map of the trails that run through
Buckeye Woods, Schleman Nature Preserve, and the Chippewa Inlet.
How many miles long is the "Yellow Trail"?
G) The nearest man-made structure
west of the above-mentioned trail map has a plaque with a serial
number on it. What is the 4th digit of the serial number?
That's it! Now plug your answers into the corresponding letters
in the coordinates above and go find the cache. Enjoy the
trails!
