This is the 3rd in a series of Touring Genesee caches that are to be released. In each one of the caches there will be a clue you will need to collect in order to solve where the final in the series is located. This series is designed to have you tour to each town in Genesee County and learn a little about its diverse history along the way.
In 2002 Genesee County experienced its Bicentennial Anniversary. In honor of this grand occasion an historical marker was purchased and placed in each of the towns in the county. These familiar blue and yellow markers will be the basis for each cache in the series. Because of a possible overlap with another cache you will not be starting at the appropriate Bicentennial marker in this case.
The history of Batavia begins with the old Town of Batavia that included the entire Holland Purchase west of the Transit meridian line. When Genesee County was formed a section near the center was marked off that included the "Bend" in the Tonawanda Creek and which became known as the Town of Batavia in 1802.
The first town meeting was held on March 1, 1803 at Vandeventer's Tavern in what is known today as Clarence, Erie County. When news reached the people of Massachusetts, Vermont and Connecticut that a land office was to be established in desirable lands at the bend of the Tonawanda Creek in the western part of New York State, they began to move into the territory to purchase land for their homes. Several hamlets are included in the Town. There are: Bushville, Daws Corners, Upton and West Batavia.
To reach the final cache in this multi you will need to first arrive at the above posted coordinates. At this location you will need to gather information from the marker in order to proceed. Here you will need to determine the following coordinates: N 42 59.ABC W 078 DE.FGH
A = the sum of the last 2 digits in the 1st year mentioned on the marker
B = the sum of the last 2 digits in the 2nd year mentioned on the marker minus the 1st digit in that year
C = the # of dates on the marker
D = the sum of the 1st 2 digits in the last year on the marker minus the sum of the last 2 digits in that year
E = the # of letters in the given name of the Architect builder
F = the # of letters in the surname of the Architect builder
G = the # of letters in the 1st word in the 3rd line on the marker
H = the # of times the word "Batavia" appears on the marker
Now that you have your new coordinates, you can proceed on to the next stage in this cache. Here again you will need to gather information to obtain the final cache coordinates. You will need to determine the following: N 42 59.IJK W 078 LM.NOP
I = the sum of the 1st & 3rd digits in the first date on the stone monument
J = subtract the 1st digit in the # of the anniversary from the 2nd digit
K = the 3rd digit in the 2nd date on the stone monument
L = the 3rd digit in the # of the anniversay
M = the 4th digit in the 1st date on the stone monument
N = the # of letters in the 1st word before " ... with Pride"
O = the 3rd digit in the # of consecutive Fairs
P = the 3rd digit in the very last date on the monument
Upon reaching the parking area for this cache location you will note that the South Gate will be closed for the season on October 2nd. There is alternative parking here but farther away. This park is opened from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.daily. Take the time to enjoy the surroundings, the great pathways, pavilion and scenic view. Since this park gets heavy traffic at certain times of the day, muggles will abound so please use your best stealth mode to protect the wearabouts of the cache container.
I hope everyone attempting this cache will get some enjoyment out of it and feedback is always welcome here. Please do not (DO NOT!) do this cache at night. I don't want anyone getting into trouble with the local police department here and there is no need to upset the neighbors as well.
The final cache container here is a painted Folgers coffee can with a log book, pencil, some trade items, a new green jeep travel bug to help you on your tour and also your 3rd clue. Don't forget to write this down so the final in the series will become clear to you.
