Geocache Description:

No, not that sort of bar! There won't be any drinks served here. This cache is located at Purakaunui, on the coast north of Dunedin.

The point where a river or inlet meets the open sea is often called a "bar". For those of us who spent most of our holidays as children at Purakaunui the point where the inlet met the sea was simply known as "The Bar".

The cache is a one litre snaplock, painted black. It is hidden in a rock cavity. You will need to move a small rock to retreive the box but it IS reasonably visible with the rock in place.

You will need to walk along a rocky shoreline to reach the cache. It IS available at high tide but probably more pleasant to go when tide is lower. The usual precautions regarding children and water apply.

Do NOT trust the GoogleMap displayed on this page. You cannot drive to the cache. The Boundary St/Bay Rd loop indicated on the map is a paper road only. They do not exist physically. You will need to walk about 450m from nearest "real" road.

On your way to the cache you will pass a "structure" that someone has put a lot of effort into building. Any ideas as to what it may be for?
