Geocache Description:

Please take extra care when at the ruins. There are several sheer drops on either side and the path can get slippery with wet leaves especially when going down the steps.

Duchal Castle was enclosed by a stone wall 70 yards long by 30 yards wide. A ditch was dug later joining the two (Green Water and Blacketty Water) rivers, making it, in effect, an island. It remained the stronghold of the Lyles (from de l’Isle). In 1488 the Earl of Lennox was garrisoned at the castle which was attacked by King James iv of Scotland in 1489 when the Lyles had backed an insurrection against him. James had two large cannons drug across Scotland to subdue his enemies. One of the cannons was called "Mons Meg", now in Edinburgh Castle. The other must have been used against the Lyles, for thereafter it was called "Duchal".. The castle was purchased by John Porterfield in 1544. The Porterfields occupied Duchal Castle until 1710, when "New Duchal" was constructed.

Now to the cache. There is verge parking for a couple of cars at the start of the path. The cache is a medium seized Tupperware box hidden just off the path running through the ruins of the castle. Take extra care in the winter as you will have to go down a set of very small steps that lead down to the lower level. We have been several times and each time the signal has been a bit erratic due to the tree cover so we have averaged it out. You will not have to go anymore than 2 feet from the path but please take care of small children and animals because there are several steep drops. Hope you enjoy it and take the time to have a good look around as you can still see the old well.
