The Ruins of Atlantis Traditional Cache
Cache Sleuth: This was one of the first caches I put out, nearly seven years ago, so I am hesitant to archive it. However, due to the storm damage to the trees in the surrounding area - including some dangerous leaning trees - I know it is time for it to go. I am looking for a good spot for a new cache in the area and hope to have it up and available soon. Thanks to all who have found this cache over the past 6-1/2 years!

Many years ago the mysterious island of Atlantis sank beneath the
ocean, never to be seen again. More recently, many strange ruins
and piles of stone have been found in the vicinity of Summersville
Lake. In ancient times, much of the land that is now the state of
West Virginia was submerged beneath a prehistoric sea. So, could
these unusual piles of stone be the remains of lost Atlantis? Only
you can decide...
The cache is hidden near some of these mysterious ruins along the
Salmon Run trail at Summersville Lake. The turn to the Salmon Run
area is just south of Summersville, WV off U.S. Route 19. If
travelling north, this is a left-hand turn. If coming south, turn
right. The trail can be accessed from Airport Road (northern end),
Salmon Run Boat Ramp parking lot (southern end), or at the
mid-point via a connector trail after crossing Hypes Foot Bridge
located along the road to the boat ramp. There is limited parking
along Airport Road and across the road from the foot bridge. The
entire trail is 2.1 miles, but the way to the cache is much shorter
if you take the southern or mid-point route. The hiding place is
located approximately 100 feet off the trail.
Cache is in a small 6"x9"x2" plastic container. Initial contents
are: a Smokey Bear eraser, 3 fossils in zip bags with descriptive
cards, NY Forest Ranger patch, dolphin pencil topper, toy car,
pencil sharpener, magnet, light sticks, Bug Alert auto insect
repeller, 1895 Indian Head cent, and a log book with pen.
I had some difficulty getting a good signal on my GPS unit due to
the tree cover, so the given coordinates are an average of several
different readings. They should get you close enough to the hiding
place that you shouldn't have too much trouble finding the
cache.
While visiting the area, please take the time to look for
whisky158's original "Salmon Run" cache and my "Elfin Abode" cache,
both also hidden along this nice trail.
