Basically a park and grab near a 5-way intersection.
About 30 years ago the large lot in front of you contained the electrical equipment to generate 1200 KV. At one point Lyons, Oregon was listed in the Guiness Book of world records for its association with this line. The line stretched from this point and along the highway stopping short of Lyons. There was a research facility in a field about 1 mile east of this site on Hwy 226. The facility was located north of the road and the access gate is still there (A Million Volts #2 is there). The experiment was made to study "Possible effects of 1200-kV transmission line operation on natural vegetation, crops, wildlife, cattle, and honey bees. These studies started immediately after the Bonneville Power Administration test line at Lyons, Oregon, began operation." Those of us who drove the road regularly wondered what the high voltage might have been doing to us! After the experiment ended, the equipment that transmitted the high voltage remained for years. They have now been removed. However, the towers that held the lines remain and are visible from this point and from the road from here towards Lyons.
