THIS CACHE IS LOCATED IN BEAUTIFUL CASCADE PARK IN ELYRIA OHIO.. FIND THE TRAIL NEAR THE LARGE PLAYGROUND AND FALL IT UNTIL YOU ARE STANDING IN THE OLD BEAR CAGE. YOU MIGHT HAVE SOME GPS PROBLEMS, BUT IT WILL GET YOU TO THE AREA OF THE CACHE. YOU WILL NOT NEED TO DO ANY CLIMBING SO LOOK LOW.
From 1920 to about 1980, the city maintained a cage for brown bears in the "cave" under this rock ledge at Cascade Park, Two black bears were kept in this cage built under a natural rock overhang. The cage was called by the locals as the "Bear's Den" or "The bear cave". The bear cave was heavily damaged during the July 4 flood of 1969. The Elyria Police Dept. sent two police officer with high powered rifles to the top of the rocks above the bear caged and were advised to shoot the bears if they started to drowned. One officer Bill Cameron reported that the bears were "very smart". He observed one bear in the floating bear house in the cage and the other one on the roof. The flood waters didn't get any higher and the bears lived. In 1980 the bear and cage was taken down and sold because of lack of funding.
