On February 17, 2013, I explored a new way into the canyon. I’m going to recommend this as the way to go as you don’t have to trespass through the condo parking lots or take a regimented route through the upscale and uptight private community.
The Devil’s Canyon trail has a lot of diversity to it, from fire road to narrow canyon with steep walls, from single track, to wider sections surrounded by grassy knolls. You will cross the creek at least two dozen times, stepping on stones to keep from getting wet, as well as walking through the dry wash at times. I suggest that you bring a hiking stick on your adventure.
WATCH OUT FOR POISON OAK. It is abundant, and at times it is close to the trail on both sides. None of the caches should be by it. If this changes, please let me know. There is no reason for anyone to come into contact with it, as long as they keep their eyes open, and know what it looks like.
Not long after Devil's Gate, the canyon widens out and gives way to a more of a rolling hill type of terrain. There are several wide, shady, grassy, (now dry) areas between the trail and the running creek. One could lay out a blanket and have a picnic. All I could hear was the creek and hundreds of birds. I wanted to put the cache in one of these areas, but all of the hiding spots are full of poison oak. Instead, I choose the other side of the trail.
I had placed two ammo cans with identical contents in the canyon. Both of them burned up in the Sesnon Fire of October, '08. I had stocked both of them with items that one could use when outdoors and said that it was okay to take what one needed. No one did, and all that good stuff sat there for two years until it burned up.
Now, we get the "No Frills" version. You are looking for a cammoed, six inch round film tin with a logsheet. You will need your own pen.
